Abstract

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a widely recognized spice not only for its culinary uses but also for its significant health potential. This study aims to explore the effects of black pepper on blood glucose levels and sperm quality in a hyperglycemic rat model. Black pepper extract, containing the active compound piperine, has been shown to lower blood glucose levels by enhancing insulin sensitivity and reducing fasting blood glucose levels. However, its impact on reproductive health also warrants attention, as the administration of black pepper extract to hyperglycemic male rats resulted in decreased sperm concentration, motility, and an increase in the number of sperm with abnormal morphology. This research highlights the importance of understanding the interactions between black pepper, blood glucose levels, and sperm quality, as well as the need for further studies to explore the clinical applications of black pepper in diabetes management and reproductive health.
