Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease whose prevalence increases with age and causes functional decline and decreased quality of life of patients. The clinical symptoms of OA are joint stiffness, joint pain and joint dysfunction, but the main problem for most patients is pain or tenderness in the joints. These symptoms will reduce the quality of life of patients suffering from osteoarthritis. The exact cause of OA is unknown. A number of studies that exist today, mention that the cause of osteoarthritis is multifactorial. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for osteoarthritis. The method used is a literature review by looking for osteoarthritis, risk factors, determinants in Google Scholar and Pubmed. Searching the literature from both national and international journals then summarizes the discussion topics and compares the results presented in the articles. From the review that has been done, the risk factors for osteoarthritis are divided into two, namely systemic factors and local factors. Systemic factors of OA are age, gender, ethnicity, genetics, and diet. Osteoarthritis is often found in women over 50 years. Several studies have analyzed the association of osteoarthritis with several genes. in addition, ethnic minorities usually develop worse symptoms. Diets such as vitamin D, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate can also be a risk factor for osteoarthritis. Local factors of OA are obesity, trauma, and occupation have also been investigated as risk factors for osteoarthritis.
